FAQS

How difficult is the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour?
It’s a moderate to challenging day tour mainly because of the altitude. The hiking itself is shorter and generally less strenuous than the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain hike, but you’ll still be walking at elevations above 4,000 m / 13,000 ft.

How high is Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain?
The main Palccoyo viewpoint is approximately 4,900 m / 16,076 ft above sea level. Because of the altitude, acclimatization is strongly recommended.

How long is the hike at Palccoyo?
The hiking route is approximately 6 km / 3.7 mi in total. The trail is relatively gradual, with several viewpoints and stops along the way.

What is the difference between Palccoyo and Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain?
Palccoyo offers several colorful mountain formations and is generally less crowded than Vinicunca. The hike is also shorter and less steep, making it a good alternative for travelers who want to experience the colorful Andean landscapes without the more demanding Vinicunca route.

What will I see on the Palccoyo tour?
You’ll visit the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountains, the Stone Forest and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding Andes, including spectacular views toward the Ausangate mountain range.

What is the Stone Forest?
The Stone Forest is a natural formation of tall rock structures shaped over time by erosion and weather. Located at high altitude, it creates a dramatic contrast with the surrounding colorful mountains and Andean landscape.

Can I see Ausangate from Palccoyo?
Yes. On clear days, the route provides impressive views toward Ausangate, one of the highest and most important mountains in the Cusco region.

Do I need to be acclimatized before visiting Palccoyo?
Yes. Although the hike is shorter than Vinicunca, the altitude is very high. Spending a few days acclimatizing in Cusco or another high-altitude destination before the tour is strongly recommended.

Is Palccoyo easier than Vinicunca?
Yes, generally. Palccoyo involves less steep hiking and a shorter walking route, making it a more accessible alternative. However, the altitude remains a major factor, so it should not be considered an easy hike.

Can I rent a horse at Palccoyo?
Horse rental may be available locally for travelers who need assistance, subject to availability. It is not included in the tour and is paid separately.

Are breakfast and lunch included?
Yes. Breakfast is provided during the journey to Palccoyo, and lunch is served after the hike.

  • Original passport or valid ID
  • Comfortable hiking shoes
  • Warm layers
  • Sun hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Rain jacket or poncho
  • Small backpack
  • Personal medication

What is the weather like at Palccoyo?
Weather can change quickly at high altitude. Mornings can be very cold and windy, while strong sunlight, rain or even snow are possible. Dressing in layers and carrying rain protection is recommended.

Can children join the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour?
Yes, but the high altitude should be taken seriously. The shorter and less steep trail makes Palccoyo a better option than Vinicunca for families, but children should still be comfortable walking at high altitude.

Can I do Palccoyo if I have just arrived in Cusco?
It is not recommended. The tour reaches approximately 4,900 m / 16,076 ft, which is considerably higher than Cusco. Allowing time to acclimatize before the tour is strongly recommended.
